Lot Essay

The design of the late 1760s for this pattern of bacchic ram-head or 'Goat's head' vase, but with down-turned horns, features in the archives of Matthew Boulton of Soho (N. Goodison, Ormolu: The Work of Matthew Boulton, London, 1974, pp. 155-157, fig. 161, k).
An identical pair of cassolette vases was sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 28 June 1979, lot 6. Another similar pair was sold by Ann, Lady Rootes (+), 22 May 1969, lot 26.
