Lot Essay

The oval pier-glass, with festoons of fruit and flowers issuing from a bubble-embossed and fretted cartouche surmounted by the Nature deity's shell badge, relates to the George II French 'picturesque' style introduced by architects such as James Paine (d. 1789) and popularised by Matthias Lock's Six Sconces, 1744.
