Lot Essay

The design for the handle appears in an 18th Century pattern book, now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (T. Crom (ed.), An Eighteenth Century English Brass Hardware Catalogue, p. 56, no. 381). A related double chest-of-drawers, with fluted pilaster angles and 'picturesque' mounts, is illustrated in H. Cescinsky, English Furniture from Gothic to Sheraton, New York, 1937, p. 270.
