Pope Joan is a legendary figure who is said to have lived in the 9th Century. Rebelling against the mediaeval social structures forbidding women to learn to read and write, she is said to have disguised herself as a man and sat for two years on the papal throne.
The game bearing her name is for 3 to 5 players, with a deck of 52 cards shared between them, as well as some counters which go onto the board. The game is based on the making of sequences by putting down cards onto the playing area.
The five cards painted on the board are the honour cards. When a player puts down any of these five, he or she collects the counters in the corresponding section. The counters in the 'Intrigue' and 'Matrimony' sections are collected when certain sequences are achieved with the cards. As for those in the 'Game' section, they go to the player who has got rid of all cards in his hand. The winner of the game is the player with the most counters at the end of the game (usually five hands).
