Lot Essay

The commode doors, with their elegant Roman-medallions framed in parquetried tablets, reflect the George III 'antique' fashion of the 1770s as featured in Thomas Malton's Compleat Treatise on Perspective, 1775 (pl. XXXIV), and later in Messrs A. Hepplewhite & Co.'s The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide, 1788. Palm and reed-wrapped pillars are sunk in the corners in the manner of a pier-commode-table in the French/Pompeian manner introduced in the late 1780s at George, Prince of Wales' Carlton House mansion, and illustrated in Thomas Sheraton's The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Drawing Book, 1793 (no. 6, pl. 4).
A pair of related cabinets, surmounted by 'chiffonier' shelves, was sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 13 December 1951, lot 96.
