AN AUSTRIAN MUSICAL PICTURE CLOCK
19th Century
Painted in oil-on-board with a young man between two amorous ladies, a dancing couple with a violinist and bugler in the next door room, seated below a clock with a white enamel dial with Roman chapters, in a concave-moulded giltwood and silvered frame, with foliate spandrels, with pencil restorers' inscriptions on the interior, one dated '1882', inscribed in blue chalk 'H1030', the twin barrel movement with silk suspension and anchor escapement, strike on gong, with trip to 7½in. long pinned musical cylinder wound from the side, with three tune selection levers to the front, with pendulum and winding key for the musical movement, the movement possibly associated
oil on board 27¾ in. (70.5 cm.) high; 33 in. (84 cm.) wide; 7 in. (18 cm.) deep

Cupid's dart marks the time on a music-playing clock incorporated in this humorous painting of the Austrian 'dejeneurs dansants' recording the popularity of the waltz. While dancers waltz in an adjoining room, a young man abandons himself to the worship of Bacchus and the entertainment of his female companions. The moral of this afternoon activity is provided by comparison with a related picture-clock portraying Emperor Franz I at Work in his Study. The latter painted in 1831 by L.C. Hofmeister, plays Joseph Haydn's Das Kaiserlied (see D. Hellich, Alt-Wiener Uhren, Vienna, 1978, no. 9).
