"Rattanakosin" was the name given to the village of Bangkok in 1782 when King Rama I designated it the new capital of Thailand. It means "Jewelled City of the God Indra". Later King Rama I gave the capital a very long name..incorporating the name "Rattanakosin"..The official name of the Bangkok era, however, is still "Rattanakosin". (MRE, preface)
