North India, circa 1900
Of 17th century Isfahan design, the plum-red field with spiralling tendrils issuing palmettes and bold serrated leaves around a column of three tan and indigo concentric cusped lozenge medallions containing arabesques interlaced with floral sprays around similar central medallions, part tan medallions at each side with flowering trees, in an indigo border of alternately facing palmettes linked by tendrils issuing interlaced arabesques and serrated leaves between ivory floral meander and burgundy similar stripes, full pile, slight staining

Lot Essay

An identical carpet, marginally longer but of almost exactly the same width, considerably more worn than this example, was sold in our New York saleroom 13 December 2000, lot 13; see also Hali 115, March April 2001, auction price guide, p.144.
