Lot Essay

This very unusual rug has as its main motifs "Leshgi" medallions, motifs frequently found in North and East Caucasian rugs, but arranged in a way that is very unusual. The considerable space either side lends the central motifs greater impact than is normally encountered with rugs of this design, particularly with their superbly contrasted colours. The minor guard stripe is one which is unchanged from rugs dating from the second half of the eighteenth century (Yetkin, Serare: Early Caucasian Rugs in Turkey, London, 1978, vol.1, pl.34)
