This is an example of a well-known group of prayer rugs which were highly sought after by collectors, particularly earlier in the twentieth century. There is a comparable example in the Ballard Collection (Ballard, James F.: The Ballard Collection of Oriental Rugs, Indianapolis, 1924, no.23. pp.42-4). The border of the present example is more openly drawn, thus being closer in feel than is usual for Ghiordes rugs of this group to the "Transylvanian" prototypes made earlier in the seventeenth century.
