With rounded ends and sliding tray, the top depicting a very densely crowded Battle of Chaldiran, spilling over into continuous battle scenes around the side, signed in gold at the bottom of one side raqam-e kamtarin Mirza Baba sana 12[00], the red base and tray with gold meandering palmette vine, touches of restoration, particularly at ends, re-lacquered

Lot Essay

According to Boroumand as reported in Khalili, Robinson and Stanley, the earliest recorded depiction of the battle of Chaldiran on a qalamdan is on an example by Mirza Baba dated AH1200 (Khalili, Nasser D., Robinson, B.W. and Stanley, Tim: Lacquer of the Islamic Lands, Part 1, London, 1997, nos 244 and 245, pp.54-5 and vol.1 no.123 pp.166-7.
