A KASHAN POTTERY ROUNDED "SILHOUETTE WARE" BOWL
Central Iran, early 13th century
The flat base with rounded sides rising to a vertical unglazed rim, the black slip covered exterior incised through to form radiating panels below a cursive inscription, covered with a plain turquoise glaze, the interior with simple central arabesque panel surrounded by sketchy comparable motifs, repaired with occasional very slight restoration
8¾in. (22.4cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

The inscription translates:
I have not seen any favours from my companion
I have not seen any attention from my fortune
I ran away from an enemy to a friend
I have not seen any support from my friend
I have become bewildered because
I have not seen anything like this in any country"
The inscription terminates with the non-sequitur "and long life".
