The inscription is difficult in a number of places to decipher, but in full appears to have read: [bism allah al-rahman al-rahim baraka (or 'izz or yumn) min allah li'abd allah (or li-khalifa) ja'far] al-imam al-muqtadir b'illah amir al-mu'minin [atal allah baqa'ahu or a'azza allah].
(In the name of God the Compassionate the Merciful, blessing (or Glory or Good-fortune) from God to the servant of God Ja'far al-Imam al-Muqtadir, the Commander of the Faithful...)

The 'Abbasid Caliph, al-Muqtadir, ruled between 295-320 (908-32 AD).
