A QAJAR TURQUOISE INSET GOLD CUP (ZARF)
Iran, 19th century
Of typical slightly rounded conical form on small spreading trumpet foot, the surface covered with diagonal rows of graduated turquoises of excellent colour, the lower ones of inverted drop shape, with silver liner for both body and foot, in fitted case

Lot Essay

Identical zarfs to this, even with the cusped rim and silver lining, are to be found in the Persian crown jewels (Meen, V.B. and Tushingham, A.D.: Crown Jewels of Iran, Toronto, 1968, p.99). The quality of this cup is fully up to that of those made for the Persian crown.
