Lot Essay
This drum with its steeply flaring sides and shallow engraved decoration on a ring pounced ground is similar to three other examples. One is in the David Collection, Copenhagen (Folsach, Kjeld v.: Islamic Art in the David Collection, Copenhagen, 1990, no.352, p.210), one is in Bavarian Army Museum in Ingolstadt (Türkische Kunst und Kultur aus osmanischer Zeit, exhibition catalogue, Recklinghausen, 1985, no.11/33, pp.368-9) while the third was sold in these Rooms 25 April 1995, lot 301.
The engraving on the present example is finer and more intricate than that on the other three of the same form. Its very dense scrolling interlaced tendrils are reminiscent of the tughrakesh style which was very much a feature of 16th century illumination and which was also popular on the pottery of Iznik in the mid 16th century. It is probable therefore that this example slightly antedates the other three.
