A SAFAVID WATERED AND DAMASCENED STEEL BELL
Iran, late 17th or early 18th century
Of spherical form, the lower half worked into a series of incurving prongs, the clapper hung inside, on swivelling loop, suspended on an S-link with dragon-head terminals, on a double loop element with central swivelling mechanism, suspended from the centre of an inverted saucer-shaped dish with central carved and damascened roundel with arabesques surrounded by pierced alternating lobed panels and triangular panels, a further double-ended element with central swivelling mechanism, central panel on upper saucer probably replaced
