TWO LATE TIMURID TINNED COPPER DISHES
Probably Khorassan, North East Iran, late 15th century
Each with rounded rimless sides on short foot, the interior of one engraved with meandering lotus flowerheads flanking a central square panel formed of four inscriptions around a central geometric panel repeating the name 'Ali, the rim with simple interlace design, the underside with an owner's inscription, the other with arabesques around a similar central square panel of four inscriptions flanking a central floral square, the exterior also with owner's inscription, tinning rubbed

Lot Essay

The inscriptions read:
With floral decorations in the centre:
"May your world be to your wishes and heaven be your friend
May the Creator of the world be your Guardian;
May all your affairs be according to your wishes
May the Lord be your Guardian".
The first two lines are from the Bustan of Sa'di; the second from Daqiqi.
The owner's name on the underside is "Habibe Khanum".

With a kufic "seal" in the centre, from the Gulistan of Sa'di:
"What would be a tabaq full of flowers for you
Read (take) a leaf from my flower garden
a flower is for five or six days only
This flower garden (gulistan) will always be fresh".
The owner's name on the underside is "Sultan ?Ahmad 'am..."
