A LATE TIMURID OR EARLY SAFAVID TINNED COPPER BOWL
Probably Khorassan or Herat, North East Iran, late 15th or early 16th century
Of squat spherical form with T-section rim on flat base, the sides with a broad band of interlaced strapwork forming reciprocal cusped and angular panels each containing floral motifs or interlaced or scrolling arabesques, divided by a slightly raised band from a band of naskh inscription below the mouth, the underside with various owner's inscriptions and imitation seals, slightly rubbed, tinning thin
10 1/8in. (25.8cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

The inscription around the rim contains invocations to Muhammad and the Twelve Imams.

The names on the underside are as follows:

(17th century Safavid seal format): illegible
(Central small seal format): Fakhr al-Din Ahmad (?)
(Two smaller flanking seals): illegible

The seal forms of the inscriptions on the underside are most unusual.
