The artists of the Vienna Secession developed the Art Nouveau movement in Austria. Alfred Roller's poster was produced in 1901 for the 9th Exhibition of the Union of Creative Artists of Austria (Secession) which ran from 13th January until 28th February 1901. The 9th Exhibition was partly a memorial show for Giovanni Segantini who was regarded by The Secession as a son of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

'Ver Sacrum' was the journal produced by this group and by 1901 was in its fourth year of production. The journal presented the work of International and Austrian artists of the movement including Koloman Moser, Charles R Mackintosh, Gustav Klimt, Adolphe Böhm, Josef Hoffman and Alfred Roller.

Roller was a founder member of the Vienna Secession and designed the posters for the 4th, 9th, 12th, 14th & 16th Exhibitions. Prior to 1901 the poster designs for the Exhibitions were non-uniform and distinctly Art Nouveau in style.

The next stage, after 1901, moved towards a geometric-ornamental style with an ornamental image and ornamental lettering, forming a total unit. Roller's poster for the 9th Exhibition represents an early experiment of the transition of the Secessionist poster from Art-Nouveau to the geometric-ornamental style.

This is the rare, larger version of the poster.
