When purchased by the family of the present owners, the invoice records the artist as Sir Colin Watson Gordon and identifies the sitter and the location as James Duff, 5th Earl of Fife, in McDuff dress tartan, the town of Paisley with the river Cart, seen from the north looking south, with the hills of Renfrewshire in the distance.
