Active in the province of Palencia during the early sixteenth century, the artist takes his name from the town of Quintanilla de la Cueza where three of his panels (including the present work) were once elements of a retable of Saint Michael. They were subsequently built into a later structure over an altar on the right side of the parish church, where they were seen by Post (loc. cit.). All three works were offered for sale in these Rooms, 12 January 1996, lots 316-318. The artist is recognizable by the morphology of his figures, whose curly locks and beards and angular profiles distinguish his compositions. Post notes 'His gifts lie at a level somewhat above the provincial average, demonstrated even in his careful and pleasant treatment of architectural settings and in the sensitively rendered and almost Giorgionesque vista of town and lake...' which have their genesis in Pedro Berruguete's painting (loc. cit.).
