According to C. Hofstede de Groot, the portrait of Bouwens was executed in 1628 at the age of 22. The coat-of-arms of the sitter's grandparents (Bouwens, Simons, van Nutt and de la Court) appear on each of the corners.

Sold with a photocopy of the certificate confirming the attribution to Maes by C. Hofstede de Groot, 1924.
