Lot Essay

The subject of the infant Christ embracing the infant Saint John the Baptist derives from a lost composition by Leonardo da Vinci, probably known to Van Cleve and his followers in Antwerp, through one of the many copies that were circulating in the Netherlands prior to 1530. The pose of the two infants repeats the drawing after Leonardo in the collection of Her Majesty the Queen in Windsor Castle.
