Provenance: Reina collection of Milan (sale, Silvestre, 1843, but not listed there); Beriah Botfield, bought from Payne & Foss for #52.10.0 (P. & F. Acquisitions, p.16).
FIRST EDITION of this collection of the greatest Latin elegiac poets: Tibullus, Catullus, Propertius and Statius. The works of the first three poets continued to be combined in many future editions. FIRST EDITION of Catullus and of Statius's Silvae. FIRST OR SECOND EDITION of Tibullus and Propertius, which were printed also at Venice in "about 1472" by Florentius de Argentina, and in February 1472 by Federicus de Comitibus, respectively.
In this copy quire 18 (first quire of Statius) has ten leaves, the error in imposition (see BMC V, 161) apparently corrected. The Grenville copy at the British Library (IB. 19549) is bound in a different order with Tibullus first, followed by Propertius, Catullus and Statius. According to Grenville, he acquired the book in its original binding with early manuscript quiring and retained that order when he had it rebound. The Botfield copy also has early manuscript quiring, which corresponds to its present arrangement. The leaf containing the life of Propertius was apparently moved at the time of rebinding by Lewis from its original position preceding Tibullus to its current logical position preceding Propertius's Elegies.
COMPLETE COPIES OF THIS EDITION ARE EXTREMELY RARE, with many, such as the Bodleian, Wroclaw and one of the British Library (IB. 19550) copies, lacking the Statius. The only recorded complete copies in the British Isles, in addition to the present one, are in the British Library (IB. 19549, on vellum), King's College, Cambridge and the Rylands Library, Manchester. There are no copies recorded in the United States.
A FINE, LARGE COPY.
