EDITIO PRINCEPS of both Orphic texts and Proclus's hymns. Only fragments of poems that were in circulation at an early date under the name of Orpheus are extant; Orpheus's fame as a singer in Antiquity was due to these poems. However, the substantial Orphic poems collected in this first Greek edition are of much later date. The Argonautica is dependent on Apollonius Rhodius's epic poem of the same title, written in the 3rd century B.C. (see lot 38), and the Orphic hymns to various gods were probably composed in Asia Minor during the Roman age. Constantine Lascaris was convinced of the exceptional antiquity of the Orphic Argonautica and read the text with his pupils. Marsilio Ficino, who translated Argonautica into Latin as well as the Orphic hymn and Proclus's hymns, apparently never raised the question of their authenticity.
