Due to the outbreak of the war in 1914, Isaac Israels was no longer given permission to work on the streets of London and decided to travel to Switzerland with a laisser-passer for Europe. The artist eventually only stayed in Switzerland for two weeks and visited Bern and Fribourg. In a letter to G.H. Marius dated 18 May 1915, Israels described the beautiful fountains he came across during his stay: 'Kent U Fribourg, nl. de benedenstad? (Anna Wagner, Isaac Israels, Venlo 1985, p. 100)
