Lot Essay

The artist was trained by his father, Hermanus Koekkoek Senior, and is one in a long line of a famous 19th Century dynasty. His subjects are mainly landscapes and maritime scenes. In the present lot - which is of an exceptional size for the artist - J.H.B. Koekkoek has used the pair of figures in the foreground as a visual point, enhancing the illusion of depth he has achieved through his lighting and composition.
