THE PROPERTY OF A GENTLEMAN
A FINE GEORGE III SILVER BREAD BASKET

Details
A FINE GEORGE III SILVER BREAD BASKET
maker's mark of Paul Storr, London, 1817

Of circular form and on pierced rim foot, the sides formed as interwoven reeded hoops and with rope-twist swing handle, engraved with a coat-of-arms, marked under base, maker's mark on foot rim - 10¾in. (27cm.) wide
65ozs. (2,028grs.)

The arms are those of Lucy quartering Percy accollé with those of Herbert for Hugh, 3rd Duke of Northumberland (1795-1847). Educated at Eton and St. John's College, Cambridge, he was summoned to the house of Lords as Baron Percy in 1812 and subsquently succeeded his father as Duke of Northumberland in the date of this basket. It is interesting to note that the right hand supporter of the arms is an elephant, the supporter of the bride's father who had recently be elevated to the Earldom of Powis in 1804, rather than a lion rampant, the Duke of Norfolk's supporter. This would almost certainly indicate that it was a wedding present from the brides father.
