A RARE ELIZABETH I SILVER-GILT TANKARD
London, 1578, maker's mark a rose slipped

Of tapering cylindrical form and on spreading foot, with scroll handle, hinged domed cover, winged demi-figure thumbpiece and fluted baluster finial, the body applied with moulded bands and chased and engraved with panels of foliate strapwork, the foot and cover chased with fruits on a matted ground, engraved with a coat-of-arms within a shaped cartouche, marked on base - 6¾in. 17.2cm.) high

The arms are probably those of Rogers, for Richard Rogers of Little Nesse, Co. Salop, who was granted arms in 1578, the year the tankard was made.
