A RARE SABRE (KARABELLA), the slightly curved single-edged blade with yelman, double-edged towards the point and chiselled on one side at the base with panels containing arabesque strapwork and two addorsed lions with entwined tails against a gilt ground, the hilt with silver cross-guard comprising short tapering quillons with trilobate tips and tapering langets, and beaked handle with wooden grips carved with chevrons in low relief, each with three silver rosette studs and silver band between, in original leather-covered wooden scabbard (leather damaged) with silver mounts comprising deep locket and chape with shaped edges, and two narrow bands (one replaced), the silver parts retaining some original gilding and engraved and chased with floral arabesques, the blade probably Indian, 17th Century
