A GERMAN CRANEQUIN FOR A CROSSBOW of characteristic form, with circular gear box struck underneath with a mark (Neue Stöckel 3401), clawed ratchet bar with later belt hook, later slender winding-arm with wood and ivory handle, the ratchet-bar etched on top with a band of interlaced strapwork against a ground of fine scrolls with a fox at one end and a hare at the other, the edge of the gear-box etched with similar strapwork and the top and bottom with scrolls framing cartouches contaning profile heads, all against a granular ground (etching on box refreshed, gilding later), and cloth-covered string retaining loop, late 16th Century
