Lot Essay

A sunflower-patera embellishes the bowl of the galleried tazza-shaped top, while the Doric columnettes frame a ribbon-entwined wand, and a concave-sided 'altar' plinth supports the serpentined 'herm' feet of the pedestal. Designed in the Louis XVI 'antique' style of the 1780's, the design of the tazza-mounts are related to a console table after a design by Cameron, executed by Charlemagne circa 1780-85, in the Catherine Palace, Pushkin (see A. Cheneriere Russian Furniture, The Golden Age 1780-1840 London 1988, p.67, fig. 55).
