Lot Essay

These two pictures appear to be painted copies based upon etchngs by Charles-Joseph (Giuseppe) Flipart (1721-1797). Those prints are reversed images of the paintings by Longhi A Lady at her Toilet (Hope Collection, Springfield Gardens, New York) for which three preparatory sketches exist in the Museo Correr, Venice, and La Lezione di Danza (Accademia Galleries, Venice). Another copy after A Lady at her Toilet in the same sense as the present picture is in the William Rockhill Nelson Gallery, Kansas City, and is attributed to the Maestro dei Riglessi by Terisio Pignatti (Pietro Longhi, Venice, 1968, p. 133, pl. 478)
