3 volumes in 1, 4° (257 x 190mm). 75 hand-coloured engraved plates with captions in Russian, German and French, 6 engraved head- and tailpieces, by C.M. Roth. (Some leaves slightly spotted, mainly marginal, a few minor stains.) Contemporary calf, boards with gilt double-headed eagle, (rebacked preserving original gilt spine, repairs at extremities). Provenance: possibly from an Imperial library (gilt eagle on covers and Russian accession number '366.b' on front endpaper; Ricardo Heredia Conte de Benamavis (booklabel).
FIRST EDITION in Russian with plate 67 misnumbered 68, published simultaneously in French and German, the latter with a fourth volume appearing in 1780. Each volume is subtitled: vol.I on the Finnish population, vol.II on the Tartars, and vol.III on the Samoyeds, Manchus, and the eastern Siberian peoples. Vol.I-II were reprinted in 1795-96, and the whole work in four volumes was published in 1799 with 100 plates.
