Half-title ("English Atlas,/Tome the First.", verso blank), engraved title, letterpress title in red and black, 39 engraved plates, views and plans, 29 double-page, 1 folding, 14 engraved maps, 13 double-page, 1 folding, 9 letterpress diagrams, 46 engraved illustrations, 3 headpieces, 3 engraved initials. (Repaired tear in blank margin of engraved title, occasional slight worming to lower inner margins of some leaves, G6 and one double-page view holed (?paper fault), small tear to lower blank margin of 2 plates, one double-page view browned.) Contemporary calf gilt, spine lettered in gilt (neat repairs to head and foot of spine, joints and corners). Provenance: John Every (ownership inscriptions, one dated 1678); Maria Baynard (presentation inscription to:); John Clarke; George Macartney, Earl Macartney (1737-1806, armorial bookplate).

A VERY FINE COPY WITH A DISTINGUISHED PROVENANCE. Earl Macartney, best known for his embassy to China, had a long and distinguished career of public service: in Russia, Ireland, India and finally on "30th Dec. 1796 he was appointed governor of the newly captured colony of the Cape of Good Hope (DNB). His tenure as governor was unfortunately curtailed when ill-health forced him to resign in November 1798. Lowndes III, p.1719.
