MELISH, John (1771-1822). Map of Philadelphia County. Constructed by virtue of an Act of the Legislature of Pennsylvania passed 19th March 1816. Philadelphia: 1819.
Engraved map of Philadelphia County by Tanner, Vallance, Kearney and Co., 470 x 550mm, on thin waxed paper, administrative boundaries hand-coloured in outline. (Occasional light spotting, creased along folds.)
Separately published. Not in Phillips List of Maps of America in the Library of Congress or in British Library Map Catalogue. John Melish, the Scots traveller, cartographer and publisher, began publishing in Philadelphia in 1811, issuing his Geographical Description of the United States from 1815. He also issued a series of county maps for Pennsylvania from 1816 for use of travellers. Undoubtably the flimsy nature of the waxed paper has meant that the survival rate has been particularly low. Despite creasing along the folds this copy is in exceptional condition.
