Lot Essay

Gilman painted six pictures which include Mrs. Mounter, Gilman's landlady at 47 Maple Street, during 1916-7; four are in public collections: 'Mrs. Mounter at the Breakfast Table', the Tate Gallery, London; 'Mrs. Mounter' the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool; 'Interior with Mrs. Mounter' the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, and 'Mrs. Mounter', Leeds City Art Gallery.

Malcolm Cormack (The Camden Town Group, New Haven Centre for British Art Exhibition Catalogue, 1980, p. 28) considers that the Mrs. Mounter portraits are among the finest works of the artist's maturity
