Lot Essay

Ruth Doggett was a student of Gilman and Sickert and her work was included in the 1913-14 Brighton exhibition of 'English Post Impressionists, Cubists and Others', arranged by the Camden Town Group. She also exhibited with the Allied Artists Association and the London Group.

Another portrait of the subject (exhibited at the Reid Gallery, London in April 1964) and a drawing also exist. Gilman showed one of these portraits during his lifetime at the London Group in March 1915 and at the Cumberland Market Group in April of the same year.

The sitter is portrayed in Gilman's rooms at 47 Maple Street which he rented from Mrs. Mounter between 1914 and 1917. These rooms are the setting for most of the artist's major paintings of this period, such as 'Interior (Mrs. Mounter)' of 1916-17 which is included as lot ? in this sale
