Daphne Spencer was the daughter of Stanley's elder brother, Harold. She lived at Merville Garden Village, near Belfast and first sat for Spencer in 1951 at the age of nineteen. Spencer produced four portraits of her during his visits between 1951-3. The present drawing is probably a study for the first portrait of Daphne which is in the collection of the Ulster Museum, Belfast
