Lot Essay

Painted in the attic studio at Charleston. The artist is seated on an armchair covered in a textile she designed in the early 1930s for Allan Walton Ltd.; an early painting of Italy from 1912 is placed upside down by her chair. One of several late self-portraits, though Richard Shone considers it less formal than most
