Lot Essay

Sir Joseph Edgar Boehm (1834-90) established himself as one of the principal sculptors of the day in England, and his skill in capturing the character of his sitter together with the realism of contemporary dress brought him great success as a portraitist. He portrayed Queen Victoria and Prince Albert several times, as well as capturing the likeness of many celebrities, such as Franz Liszt, Benjamin Disraeli and Charles Darwin. The present bust reflects Boehm's ability to execute a realistic portrait while maintaining a formal atmosphere appropriate to the sitter and medium.
