Alfredo Pina (b.1883) was Milanese by birth, studying at the Academia Brera then under Rodin in Paris. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français (1911), the Salon d'Automne (1911), the Salon des Indépendants and the Tuileries. As exemplified by this charismatic portrait study of Beethoven he specialised in portrait busts of musical and artistic figures.
