Kändler, the old man slumped on the back of a donkey, naked but for a yellow robe, supported by a youth clad in a claret drape and wreathed with vine, a maiden lying beside them feeding the donkey a bunch of grapes taken from a basket, a putto pulling the animal's tail, on a rocky shaped oval mound moulded with white and gilt scrolls (restoration to Silenus's right leg, foot and hand, to donkey's ear, to youth's left hand and bunch of grapes and to other extremities, slight chips), cancelled blue crossed swords mark, incised No: 2724., circa 1880
