BILL BAILEY - WILDFOWLER

1927-1993

Bill Bailey was born on 8th August 1927 at Finchley in North London. At the age of 13 he had his first, and unforgettable taste of wildfowling when taken flighting by a friend on the Blackwater Estuary. His interest in shooting then developed fully during his time at an engineering training college in Cheltenham. At the age of 25, in 1952, he joined the Home Counties Wildfowlers Association and made such an impression that he quickly found himself elected at the club's committee. He regarded wildfowling, with its lack of artificiality, and the frequently wild and bracing conditions under which it was conducted as sport in its purest form. Punt gunning held a particular appeal for him. He owned a cottage on the edge of the Dengie Marshes in Essex which became the base for his wildfowling forays - always in the company of his beloved spaniel Saxon - and the centre for much restoration and improvement to his single and double punts. In addition to all his active fowling he contributed a great deal of time and energy to the administration of his chosen sport. Elected to the executive committee of WAGBI in 1963 he moved on to become Vice-Chairman in 1974, and then Chairman between 1975 and 1979. On his retirement he was appointed Vice-President by the Association.
