Lot Essay

These chairs are designed in the early 19th century 'antique' manner, with Grecian scrolled legs and backs, tablet-centred rails and reeding, such as feature in chair patterns illustrated in Thomas Sheraton's Cabinet-maker, Upholsterer and General Artist's Encyclopedia, 1804. A black-painted chair of this pattern from the collection of Mrs. Clifford Musgrave, is illustrated in C. Musgrave, Regency Furniture, London, 1961, pl. 39B. The latter chair has gilt-fillet banding on the tablet and there are also traces of gilding on this pair
