Lot Essay

This oval cistern's stand with herm feet capped by libation-paterae relates to those of the '2 mahogany oval cisterns with brass hoops and handles...#4.4.0', supplied in 1763 for Dumfries House by Thomas Chippendale (d.1779; see: C.Gilbert, The Life and Work of Thomas Chippendale, London, 1978, vol. II, fig. 121). However, it is possible that this stand was supplied by Ince and Mayhew for William Aislabie (d.1781) at the time when he was creating his Banqueting House in the grounds of Studley Royal, Yorkshire. They are thought to have supplied at set of chairs with related ornament that were sold from the same source as this stand, in these Rooms, 5 July 1990, lot 142.
