Lot Essay

There are five related tables of different sizes, although all much larger, at Petworth House, Sussex. Long thought to date from the 19th century because of their unusual form and painted decoration, they have been identified in 18th century inventories and are now known to date from circa 1690. It is now thought that some may have been used to support part of the magnificent Oriental porcelain acquired for the house at that time (see: G. Jackson-Stops, 'Furniture at Petworth', Apollo, May 1977, p. 359-360, fig. 4)
