Lot Essay

Fanciful ribbon-back parlour chairs followed the introduction of mahogany in George II's reign. Several are illustrated in William de la Cour's First Book of Ornaments, 1741. However, the 'cusps' and scrolls of this reflect the fashion of the 1750s and, in particular, Matthias Darly's Chair-Maker's Guide which, although not published until 1766, contains many of his earlier designs
