Lot Essay

Designed in the George II 'picturesque' manner, the serpentined frame with arch-centred cresting and volute-scrolled arms corresponds to a 1759 sofa pattern published by Thomas Chippendale in his Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, London, 3rd. ed., 1762, pl. XXX. He also featured a related pattern of stretcher-tied pilaster legs on a 'French chair', ibid., pl. XIX
