Lot Essay

The design is inspired by a series of the 1780s and 1790s that began with Chippendale, was developed by Hepplewhite (Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide, 1788, pl. 80) and culminated in the Cabinet-Maker's London Book of Prices, 1788, pt. III, pl. LIII. An executed example that is very close to the present chest is illustrated in F. Collard, Regency Furniture, Woodbridge, 1985, p. 17
